International Investor Protection Initiative
The Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) is participating in World Investors Week, a global campaign to educate and protect investors.
By participating in World Investor Week, CySEC wants to educate the investing public about the types of risks lurking in this sector, and also emphasizes the importance of educating the public in basic financial knowledge – an area where Cyprus is lagging behind.
“World Investor Week 2021 is a great opportunity to raise awareness among investors and the general public about the various risks, as well as intensify our efforts to inform people,” said CySEC Chairman George Theocharidis.
“Prevention is the most effective way to minimize risks for investors, and this is the direction the commission will move, especially in this volatile economic environment in which the digitalization of financial services is accelerating,” added Theocharidis, stressing that promoting financial literacy is critical …
This year’s World Investor Week, hosted by the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), an association of organizations regulating the global securities and futures markets, focuses on two main themes: sustainable financing and fraud and fraud prevention.
“These messages complement messages from previous issues of IOSCO World Investor Week, such as online investing, initial coin offerings, investment fundamentals, and digital learning and online education,” IOSCO said in a statement.
“This annual global initiative has effectively disseminated key investor protection messages around the world, especially at a time when an increasing number of retail investors are involved in the securities markets,” said IOSCO Chairman and CEO Hong Conga Securities and Futures Commission said Ashley Alder.
“Despite the pandemic, IOSCO WIW education initiatives continue to play a critical role in building confidence in the markets and protecting retail investors,” Alder added.
Over the course of the weekly campaign, CySEC will take part in a number of initiatives aimed at both investors and the general public.
The commission’s activities include publishing a quick guide for investors with easy-to-use, practical advice on how to identify risks in time and avoid fraud.
The guide will be published in the investor protection section of the CySEC website.
In addition, the commission will also expand this year’s main posts with social media posts in the form of recommendations.
After the conclusion of World Investor Week, they will be added to the Smart Investor Booklet, which will be available on the CySEC website.
The Commission has also added the World Investor Week logo to its home page, which allows visitors to navigate to the WIW website.
